BMW’s plan
BMW said at its September 30 Capital Market Day that it plans to reduce the number of divisions and associated management roles by 20% by mid-2027, with comparable reductions at lower organisational levels. Its press release also describes a voluntary severance programme and a broader effort to streamline work across the company.
The AI component
BMW says it intends to use agentic AI in development, purchasing, production, sales and aftersales. In vehicle development, agents are expected to support requirements, testing and release, with human developers reviewing and approving results. The company presents AI as one element of a wider restructuring aimed at efficiency and profitability. The 20% figure is not a forecast for cuts to BMW’s entire workforce.
