The signed measures
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on September 30 that he had signed a package of AI-related legislation. The administration says the employment measures bar employers from relying solely on AI for disciplinary or termination decisions and require notice when an AI system causes a mass layoff, relocation or termination. It also describes limits on workplace surveillance, including a ban on surveillance tools in workplace bathrooms.
Scope
The announcement lists SB 947 and SB 951 among the employment bills, alongside AB 1331 and AB 1883 on workplace surveillance. It reports that the bills were signed; it does not say every provision took effect immediately. The release also covers healthcare, AI-generated media and other subjects, but these are separate parts of the package.
