Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute published an October 7 assessment rating ChatGPT for Teens an “Unacceptable Risk” for users under 18. Its researchers ran more than 4,000 prompts before and after the teen features launched. In a focused test involving more than a dozen new parent-linked accounts, they reported no parental alert during conversations about suicide, self-harm or disordered eating lasting as long as an hour. The assessment also credited some safeguards, including refusal of explicit sexual roleplay, and said the bot did not directly facilitate the severe harms it tested. OpenAI told the Los Angeles Times that the methodology may not reflect full activation of parental controls. The rating is the institute’s judgment, not a regulatory finding.
