Codex CLI daemon auto-start debate timeline

An issue filed in the Codex GitHub repository on September 25 asks OpenAI to make daemon_auto_start opt-in for the command-line client. Its author reports that an interactive session starts a persistent app-server process and a separate updater, and describes packaging and environment problems in their setup. Those observations are the reporter’s account of particular installations, not an independently reproduced security finding.

The older issue drew renewed attention when it was submitted to Hacker News on October 12. Developers there debated whether automatic updates are useful for a fast-moving coding tool or disruptive when software is installed through a package manager. The issue remained open when reviewed; the discussion does not itself establish a product change.
