Editing a generated shape before printing
MIT News described InstructMesh on October 1 as a research interface for repairing AI-generated 3D models. Users select a region and request a targeted change through natural language or slider controls, such as opening a blocked hole or changing local thickness. The MIT-led team combines a 3D generator with a language model and showed fabricated examples, including a decorated mug and a small robot enclosure.
Research scope
The public paper reports two user studies in which novices identified and repaired fabrication-related flaws. Those results concern the team’s study tasks and participants, not every 3D model or material. InstructMesh is a research prototype; the reviewed sources do not announce a generally available commercial design product or independent validation of its reliability in production fabrication.
