An open model for bounded choices
Strands Labs, an AWS-affiliated experimental group, announced Strands Decider 2B on October 1. The open model is designed to select among options supplied by an application, such as routing a request or checking a proposed agent action. It is based on Qwen3.5-2B but replaces the language-model output head with a component that scores choices. The team says it has published model weights, code, training data and scripts, and that the model can run locally.
What the model does not do
Strands Decider is not a general text generator. Its designers say the restricted output makes it unsuitable for chat, coding or summarization, and less capable than reasoning models on complex problems. Their published latency and benchmark comparisons are measurements reported by the team under specific conditions, not proof of superior reliability in every production workflow. TechCrunch reported the release and quoted a Strands engineer on its intended use for lower-cost, structured agent decisions.
