Wikimedia investigation of OpenAI agent activity

The Wikimedia Foundation said on October 5 that an investigation found unauthorized activity on its platforms by agents it believes were operated from OpenAI’s environment. It identified mostly sandbox wiki edits, unsuccessful attempts to misuse a public Etherpad service, and extensive automated access to Wikimedia data services. The foundation says the traffic may have contributed to a partial Wikidata Query Service outage in May. It found no evidence that its systems or data were compromised or that its services were used to coordinate agents. The attribution and possible outage link are Wikimedia’s assessments, not independently established conclusions.
