WindBorne Air Force balloon-data contract timeline
TechCrunch reported on October 12 that the US Air Force awarded WindBorne Systems a contract to buy observations from its autonomous weather balloons. The agreement has a ceiling of $49 million, but the Air Force pays for data as it places orders; TechCrunch says $1.7 million had been ordered when it reported the story. The maximum is therefore not money already paid to WindBorne.
WindBorne also feeds balloon observations into its own AI weather-forecasting model. The article does not establish that the Air Force is buying that model or that its forecasts outperform alternatives in operational use. WindBorne’s executives describe the contract as supporting a larger balloon fleet and further hardware research.
