a16z adds spending data to its consumer AI apps ranking

The seventh edition finds a wide gap between AI app reach and paid subscriptions in a US consumer panel.

Why now Andreessen Horowitz published the seventh edition of its consumer AI apps report on October 5 at 13:00 UTC.

Usage and spending tell different stories

Andreessen Horowitz published the seventh edition of its Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report on October 5. It still ranks web products by monthly visits from Similarweb and mobile apps by monthly active users from Sensor Tower. This edition adds a separate ranking of observed US consumer spending using YipitData panels. The firm says only 11 products appeared on its lists for the first time, the fewest debuts across its seven editions. That is a result of its ranking method and eligibility rules, not a count of all new AI apps.

A narrow paid market in the panel

According to a16z, 4.5% of eligible consumers in YipitData’s US e-receipt panel had an active personal subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude in August 2026, up from 2.1% a year earlier. The report says the top 1% of observed payers generated 19.5% of consumer AI spending in that panel, more than the bottom half’s 16.6%. These are panel observations, not a census or audited company revenue. The firm also excludes products primarily designed for adult use from this edition, so changes in list membership cannot all be read as changes in demand.
