OpenAI plans visual ads beside ChatGPT image generation
A limited US test is due later in October; OpenAI also announced more ad measurement partners and proposed checks of brand-suitability controls.
A limited visual ad test
OpenAI announced on October 5 that it will test a new visual ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. The initial test is planned for later in October with a small group of advertisers in the United States. OpenAI says the ads will be labeled and kept separate from the image a user creates. The company also says ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Those are OpenAI’s stated design and policy commitments; the new visual format has not yet been tested in public at scale.
More measurement and proposed checks
Alongside the format, OpenAI announced integrations and partners for measuring actions after an ad, including purchases and sign-ups. It also said it is developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. According to OpenAI, those partners would assess how its ad-placement standards work in a controlled setting without access to private user conversations. The announcement does not establish that the proposed evaluations are complete or that the new format is already available to all advertisers. It marks a further expansion of ChatGPT’s advertising system, with the rollout and the effectiveness of its safeguards still to be observed.
