GPT-6.1 Sol brings a new price point to coding and computer use

OpenAI's September 29 release lists standard API rates of $2 input and $10 output per million tokens, with higher rates for long prompts and Fast mode.

What happened

OpenAI’s September 29 release feed introduced GPT-6.1 Sol. Its live model documentation now lists gpt-6.1-sol for coding, computer use and professional work, with text and image input, text output, a 1,050,000-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens.

The price needs its footnotes

Standard rates are $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Prompts above 272,000 input tokens use higher rates for the full request, Fast mode doubles Standard pricing, and tools can add fees. The headline prices are a starting point for a cost comparison, not a complete bill estimate.

What developers should check

The documentation requires the Responses API for tool calling. Chat Completions is supported without tool calling. Reasoning effort defaults to medium and does not support none or minimal, which makes a direct settings copy from another model unsafe to assume.

OpenAI describes performance as near-Astra at a lower cost. AITrending has not independently benchmarked that claim. The useful next comparison is successful task completion and total cost on the same repository or business workflow.
