Simon Willison says Jev may be a new shape of LLM
The interesting claim is not that Jev writes better text. It is that many applications need a typed decision instead of text at all.
Why now Independent framing moved the conversation from a company launch toward a broader software-design question. typed decisions, not prose
The argument
Jev is designed around constrained outputs such as booleans, choices and scores. Simon Willison highlighted that as a potentially different application shape from familiar chat and completion models.
That distinction matters for software that needs routing, moderation, ranking or policy decisions. A predictable result that fits a type can be more useful than fluent prose that still has to be parsed and checked.
Hype check
“New shape” is a strong phrase. Whether it sticks depends on calibration, latency, cost and independent evaluation across domains, not on how neatly the API returns an enum.
