oMLX just went from side project to funded infrastructure
Creator Jun Kim joined Hugging Face, giving the Apple-silicon local AI project funded maintainer time without changing its Apache-2.0 license.
What happened
Jun Kim, creator and maintainer of oMLX, joined Hugging Face. The announcement says oMLX will remain Apache 2.0 and that Kim will continue leading it with more time for stability and development.
Why this is bigger than a hire
Local AI projects often depend on maintainers working around a full-time job. Funding the person responsible for a key layer can reduce release lag and make downstream users more comfortable building on it.
Hugging Face also describes a concrete technical goal: make it faster to move from a Transformers model definition to a reference MLX implementation that multiple engines can consume.
What to watch next
Watch time-to-support for new models, upstream contributions to mlx-lm and mlx-vlm, and whether oMLX becomes a stable shared layer instead of another isolated runtime.
