Shopify introduces Canvas for building stores with Sidekick
Merchants can view a whole store, edit elements directly and ask Sidekick to change theme files in a new visual workspace.
Design the whole store in one view
Shopify introduced Canvas on October 1, bringing its Sidekick AI agent into a new visual workspace for online-store design. Merchants can see multiple pages side by side, pan across the store and zoom in to change individual elements. They can also describe a change in chat and watch Sidekick apply it. Shopify says Canvas renders the actual theme code rather than a static mockup, allowing merchants to test interactions and view pages with different products and screen sizes. TechCrunch reported that the interface combines Sidekick’s existing theme and code-editing abilities into a whole-store design workflow.
Shopify says Sidekick can now work directly with theme files, coordinate changes across templates and inspect screenshots as it iterates. The announcement describes code validation and visual review inside that workflow. These are company-stated capabilities; the reviewed sources do not establish how consistently the agent makes correct or accessible design changes across merchant stores.
Availability is still expanding
Canvas is rolling out over the coming days, so it should not be described as already available to every merchant. Shopify also says the product is early and does not yet replace its existing theme editor. The immediate change is a new way to direct and inspect AI-assisted store edits, while the quality of generated storefronts still depends on the merchant’s review and the implementation produced for each theme.
