TikTok announces AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct checkout
TikTok is building a conversational shopping agent and in-feed brand checkout, but has not detailed a broad rollout schedule.
Shopping conversations inside TikTok
TikTok announced Shopping Assistant on October 5 as a conversational AI agent for product discovery and purchasing. The company says the assistant can retain a shopper’s needs during a conversation and answer questions about product details, sizing, shipping and availability. It also introduced Buy Direct, a planned in-app checkout that would let users purchase from a brand’s listing in the For You feed without leaving TikTok. TechCrunch reported the two features later that day, describing them as an expansion of TikTok’s commerce tools beyond its existing Shop marketplace.
An announcement with rollout details still open
TikTok says it is building these experiences with partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. Its announcement does not identify a broad launch date, supported markets or which users and brands can access each feature now. Nor does it supply independent evidence that the assistant improves shopping decisions. The change could keep more discovery and checkout activity inside the app, but that is a product strategy described by TikTok and assessed by TechCrunch, not an observed effect of a completed rollout.
