UK anti-AI group disrupts industry dinner, Guardian reports

Pull The Plug is using disruptions to confront AI companies, a tactic that other campaigners say could backfire.

Why now The Guardian published its reporting and participant interviews on October 6 at 06:00 UTC.

A disruption at an industry dinner

Members of the UK group Pull The Plug disrupted a technology dinner addressed by a senior Nvidia executive, according to an October 6 Guardian report. The newspaper interviewed four participants as they planned the action the previous week. It reported that they unfurled a banner, shouted slogans against Nvidia and Palantir, and were removed from the room. The Guardian also described a separate October 1 protest outside Palantir’s London headquarters. These events show how one campaign group is bringing its opposition to AI development directly to company gatherings; they do not establish the protesters’ broader claims about AI harms.

Campaigners disagree on tactics

The Guardian reported that Pull The Plug advocates direct action and includes some people with experience in climate protest. Members told the paper they want to confront executives and make public concern visible. PauseAI, a different network of AI-focused campaign groups, has rejected that tactic. Its chief executive told the Guardian that confrontational action could give AI companies a way to portray the wider movement as criminal and alienate the public. The disagreement matters because the same reporting describes growth in campaign interest after recent AI-safety warnings. The scale of that growth comes from organizers’ accounts, and the long-term effect of either strategy is not yet known.
