What it is

Foremerge is an Apache-2.0 coordination layer for teams running several coding agents against the same repository. Its central idea is to detect conflicting intent before agents produce a conventional Git merge conflict.

Why it showed up

The project reached 476 GitHub stars and drew a Show HN discussion. That is modest compared with a large agent framework, but the problem becomes more relevant as developers run parallel tasks instead of one coding agent at a time.

Why intent is different from code

Two branches can merge cleanly while implementing incompatible assumptions. A coordination protocol needs to expose ownership, plans and affected areas before the final diff exists.

Watch point

The useful test is whether Foremerge catches real semantic conflicts without forcing agents to spend more time coordinating than coding. Integration depth with existing harnesses will matter more than the standalone protocol.
