What launched

OpenAI dots is an always-on agent powered by GPT-6 Astra, introduced on September 29. The official documentation describes an agent with its own cloud computer and browser, memory across conversations, and the ability to continue work and return with results or decisions that need the user.

Cloud work and local access

Its cloud work can continue while the user’s device is off. Access to a personal computer is different: the connected computer must be online with the ChatGPT app open. A messaging connection, an app connection and a local-computer connection grant different capabilities.

The documentation supports communication through ChatGPT, Slack and Teams. Moving between these channels reaches the same dot, while messages stay in their respective channels. Existing permissions and review requirements continue to apply to actions and information sharing.

Availability checked September 30

The official documentation lists a gradual rollout to eligible Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 users over 18 outside the EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are listed as rolling out worldwide; Enterprise requires an administrator to enable access. Eligible plans may not see the feature immediately.

Setup starts on desktop. Access to the same dot in the mobile app depends on the supporting update; mobile web is not supported. Availability can change, so use the official documentation for the current account and region requirements.

Reliability is still a question

IT Home reported that Dottie did not respond to a launch-preparation request during the first public demonstration. The report establishes a reported interruption, not its technical cause or a product-wide failure rate. See the demo follow-up alongside the launch details.

The domain-name rivalry

The singular dot.com redirects to xAI. TechCrunch reports that xAI acquired the address before OpenAI’s dots launch; the theory that this was a deliberate prank remains unconfirmed. The domain story separates the observed redirect from claims about the buyer’s motive.
