Financing tied to compute leases
Broadcom has agreed to provide Anthropic with financing of up to $42 billion for AI infrastructure, Reuters reported on October 1 after examining Anthropic’s IPO prospectus. The facility is connected to Anthropic’s commitment to lease tensor processing unit computing capacity over five years. Reuters says that commitment totals $125.2 billion, so the proposed financing could cover roughly one-third of it. The $42 billion figure is an upper limit on available financing, not evidence that Anthropic has borrowed or spent that amount.
The arrangement’s limits
According to Reuters, the financing may involve convertible debt and Broadcom could designate another financing partner. Anthropic’s filing says it does not expect notes to be sold before its IPO. It also warns that Broadcom’s roles as hardware supplier and financing partner create potential conflicts of interest affecting access to compute. Those are risks disclosed in the prospectus, not findings that Broadcom has denied capacity or changed prices. Broadcom did not comment to Reuters, and Anthropic declined to comment.
