Flock audio detection clarification timeline
Flock CEO Garrett Langley’s October 14 TechCrunch Disrupt remarks described its microphones as detecting just gunshots. TechCrunch contrasted that framing with Flock’s advertised fireworks, crash and sideshow detection. A company spokesperson confirmed those broader capabilities while saying the system is not designed to monitor conversations or analyze speech and does not currently detect human distress.
Flock’s own explanatory page distinguishes continuous on-device sound analysis from retained event clips. It says short clips can incidentally include nearby words, while denying transcription, voice identification and searchable speech. These are company descriptions, not an independent privacy or accuracy audit. The new event is the public clarification, not a newly launched audio product.
