Eko island agents timeline
Eko is the agent architecture studied in the October 5, 2026 preprint “Is this machine playing?” A coding assistant controls a body in a simulated island through an HTTP interface, receives structured observations and can write persistent memory in its workspace. The main study used Claude Code with Claude Opus 4.7.
The authors describe game-like exploration, improvised activities and later tests of whether saved experience helps with assigned tasks. A curiosity-oriented prompt and automatic continuation are part of the setup. Persistent learning in this experiment refers to external text memory, not changes to the underlying model’s weights. The reported behavior does not establish consciousness or an internal experience of play.
