Apple puts AI romance apps behind an 18+ App Store rating

New declarations arrive November 16, with a January 12 deadline for all apps; the rule covers virtual companions offering sexual or romantic content.

Why now Apple's November 2 developer notice sets new App Store Connect content descriptors and deadlines, highlighted in TechCrunch's November 3 report.

AI companions that offer sexual or romantic content will fall under a minimum 18+ App Store age rating, according to new rules Apple announced November 2. Developers will begin seeing the relevant content declarations in App Store Connect on November 16, and all apps must complete them by January 12, 2027.

The change puts virtual relationships inside the same new “Dating and Relationships” descriptor as features that connect real people. Apple’s wording explicitly includes “a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.” Apps that include the descriptor receive a minimum age rating of 18+.

That scope matters. The notice does not say every chatbot, productivity assistant or AI companion automatically receives an adult rating. It ties the requirement to dating and relationship features and the specified romantic or sexual interactions. Nor does the notice itself establish that an age rating is an identity-verification system.

Two dates developers need to track

From November 16, developers must provide the declarations when submitting an app update or changing their age-rating questionnaire. January 12 is the broader completion deadline for all apps. Developers maintaining a companion app therefore have a concrete questionnaire requirement to review, even if they are not announcing a new model or feature.

Apple is also adding a separate “Shared Location” descriptor for sharing real-world location with another person or group. That declaration may leave the minimum rating unchanged in some regions, while Brazil requires A16 for Shared Location and A18 for Dating and Relationships.

Apple says developers who believe their app qualifies for a lower Brazilian rating can request an official rating from the country’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Its example is location sharing designed specifically for parents and children; the notice does not promise a general exemption for AI romance apps.

TechCrunch reported the change November 3. The underlying policy announcement is dated November 2, and its implementation deadlines are still ahead. The immediate news for companion developers is the new classification and filing timetable, rather than a claim that Apple has already removed their apps or banned all virtual companions.
