DoorDash opens a waitlist for an AI agent that takes orders by text
The agent can turn a text request into a suggested cart and complete checkout after confirmation, but U.S. access begins with a beta waitlist.
What the agent does
DoorDash announced a text-based ordering experience on September 30. A customer can message a request such as a favorite meal, a specific dish or a local recommendation. DoorDash says its assistant will search nearby menus, propose a cart and send photos from restaurant listings. It also describes handling orders for a group with different dietary preferences and quantities. The company says the customer confirms the order inside the conversation before the agent completes checkout. TechCrunch reports that the interface uses Apple Messages.
The new flow builds on Ask DoorDash, the company’s existing in-app assistant. Its key change is that discovery and checkout can happen in a text thread, with less navigation through restaurant pages. DoorDash’s description of personalized suggestions reflects its own product claims; the reviewed sources do not independently test whether recommendations match a customer’s intent or whether a complex group order is assembled correctly.
Who can try it
DoorDash is opening a waitlist for U.S. users to join the beta. The announcement does not establish broad availability or a date when everyone can use the feature. Until a customer has access, it is a planned workflow rather than a generally available replacement for the app. Accurate item details, substitutions and final charges remain important checks before confirming any order.
