Microsoft Copilot Hybrid Intelligence Windows preview launch Developing

Microsoft previews Copilot actions across local files and Windows

Microsoft showed an Autopilot tax-preparation workflow using local files, but says the underlying Copilot features will arrive over the next few months.

Why now The Verge reported Microsoft's October 7 onstage demonstration and stated rollout window at 18:01 UTC.

Local files enter a Copilot demonstration

Microsoft used its October 7 Windows and Surface event to preview Copilot features that can work with files stored on a PC and take actions across Windows, The Verge reported from the event. The company calls the approach Hybrid Intelligence, combining local and cloud AI models. In a video shown onstage, Copilot executive Jacob Andreou asked an Autopilot agent to help respond to an accountant. The agent searched folders for tax documents, renamed and compressed the files, then drafted an email with the archive attached. The example showed Microsoft’s intended workflow, not proof that an ordinary user can perform it today or that it will succeed reliably with unfamiliar files.

Rollout and permissions remain open

Andreou said Copilot features built on Hybrid Intelligence would arrive over the next couple of months, according to The Verge. Microsoft also previewed a Windows 11 search bar that can expose quick actions such as changing dark mode or microphone volume; Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri said that experience would start arriving in the fall. These are separate timelines, and neither is a confirmed full release date. Broad access to local files and operating-system actions makes permission scope and confirmation steps important, but the reviewed onstage report does not establish how those controls will work in the final product. This software preview is distinct from the same event’s Surface hardware preorders and Windows agent-container announcement.
