Microsoft and Nvidia prepare to unveil an AI-focused Surface laptop

Reuters reports the companies will present a Windows laptop built around Nvidia chips and local AI agents at a San Francisco event; pricing remains unknown.

Why now Reuters reported the planned October 7 unveiling at 10:05 UTC, ahead of the Microsoft event.

A planned local-AI hardware reveal

Microsoft and Nvidia plan to introduce a laptop called Surface Laptop Ultra at a Microsoft event in San Francisco on October 7, Reuters reported. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are expected to present the machine. Reuters says it is expected to use Nvidia’s RTX Spark chips, announced in June, and to support AI agents performing work such as coding on a Windows PC without sending every task to the cloud. This is reporting ahead of the event, not confirmation that the laptop has already shipped or that every advertised local-agent capability is available to buyers.

Open questions for the launch

Reuters described the product as part of a longer effort to move some AI work from cloud data centers onto personal computers. It also noted the challenge of containing agents safely on a device with access to a user’s files and tools. Price is another unresolved question: an analyst told Reuters that rising memory costs could make powerful local-AI machines hard to afford. Microsoft has not announced the Surface Laptop Ultra’s price, release date or final specifications in the reviewed report. Those details, and the scope of its safety controls, need to be checked against the actual unveiling.
