TradeSun sues OpenAI over the Astra model name
TradeSun alleges that OpenAI's Astra name will confuse customers with its existing software; OpenAI says the complaint has no merit.
A dispute over the model name
TradeSun sued OpenAI in San Francisco federal court on October 5 over the name of OpenAI’s Astra AI model, Reuters reported. TradeSun says it has used Astra since 2021 for software that uses AI agents to analyze trade documents for banks and other financial institutions. Its complaint alleges that OpenAI’s much more prominent use of the same name will confuse customers about the source of TradeSun’s product. That is the company’s claim, not a finding by the court.
The requested remedy and response
According to Reuters, TradeSun is asking for unspecified monetary damages and a court order preventing OpenAI from using the Astra name. An OpenAI spokesperson said the complaint has no merit. The case is identified as TradeSun Inc. v. OpenAI OpCo LLC in the Northern District of California. No court ruling on infringement or remedy was reported. The dispute concerns branding of a released AI model; it does not by itself change the model’s availability or establish that customers have actually been confused.
