Ars reports drone strikes disrupted Yandex data centers used for AI
An English-language report describes strikes on two Yandex facilities, including one housing supercomputers used to train YandexGPT.
AI infrastructure becomes part of the disruption
Ukrainian drone strikes hit Yandex data centers in Russia’s Sasovo and Kaluga regions on October 8 and 9, Ars Technica reported, citing Reuters. The English-language account describes two of the company’s five data centers as knocked out and says the disruption affected Yandex’s AI chatbot and other online services. These are reported wartime developments, not a direct infrastructure inspection by AITrending.
The Sasovo facility houses two of Yandex’s three supercomputers used to train YandexGPT, according to the report. Ars also says Yandex acknowledged disruptions to some services and stated that no employees were hurt. That makes the incident relevant to AI availability and training infrastructure, rather than only to search or consumer websites.
Damage is not a complete capacity assessment
The report does not provide an independently audited estimate of lost AI-training capacity, a full account of backup arrangements or a restoration timetable. Damage at a facility does not establish that model weights were destroyed or quantify how long training will be delayed. Service disruption, physical damage and the effect on future model development should remain separate claims as further reporting emerges.
