RTFM, short for Retrieve The Forgotten Memory, is an MIT-licensed local retrieval tool using SQLite. It indexes code and documents and exposes search through MCP. Its Claude Code plugin requires Python 3.10 or newer and supports Linux, macOS, Windows and WSL; other MCP clients can use the rtfm-ai pip package and rtfm-serve entry point.
The optional memory workflow snapshots Claude Code’s curated memory files across projects into ~/.rtfm/memory.db. It is separate from indexing a single project and does not mean the application stores complete conversation transcripts. Core local retrieval requires no provider API key; the agent using the results has its own model access and costs. Optional semantic-search and document-parsing extras require separate installation.
