Why now PI-Desktop published v0.18.0-beta.6 on October 11 at 07:01 UTC; its repository resurfaced in the October 12 discovery snapshot. The specific new event is the beta release, not the repository's current activity counter.

An agent workspace gains a way to move settings

PI-Desktop has added encrypted S3 backup and sync in its October 11 v0.18.0-beta.6 release. Its English release notes also describe simplified sync settings and an option to expose the experimental feature in packaged builds. That gives users of the local-first coding-agent desktop a route to carry configuration between installations. The notes document the feature’s inclusion; they do not provide an independent security audit or establish that every backup and restore path has been tested.

The same beta fixes MCP requests that outlive their timeouts, retains embedded resource text in tool results and corrects double-counting of reasoning tokens in the chat context display. Those changes matter to people who use several tools and models inside one long-lived workspace: an inaccurate context gauge or a stalled tool call can change when they intervene.

What the release does not change

PI-Desktop’s English README presents the product as a model-agnostic desktop workspace with local projects and sessions, plugin support and configurable provider connections. It calls the 0.18 line an early preview. Encrypted S3 sync is therefore a new optional path for configuration, not evidence that the whole workspace has become a hosted service or that agent work automatically leaves the user’s machine.
