Zotero MCP expands its PDF hunt and repairs Windows agent startup
Version 0.15.0 adds OpenAlex repository PDFs, moves semantic indexing out of the MCP handshake and replaces Unix-only CLI detection in its Zotero Agent plugin. One Windows user reports success after updating.
A better chance of finding the full paper
Zotero MCP 0.15.0 gives research agents another route to a paper’s PDF: when importing by DOI, it now checks repository copies listed by OpenAlex after Unpaywall and before the publisher’s PDF link. The release says it tries open-access locations first and avoids downloading a URL already attempted through another source.
That matters when a publisher supplies only a preview or the first lookup misses an institutional repository. It is an additional retrieval path, not a guarantee that every paper has an accessible full text. The update also accepts Markdown and YAML attachments and adds a machine-readable truncated flag to JSON full-text responses, helping an agent distinguish a complete read from a capped one.
Two different startup problems
The MCP server now launches startup semantic-index updates in a child process. According to the maintainer, native embedding and database calls could previously stall the server’s initialization response until Claude Desktop timed out. Base installations also stop advertising semantic-search tools when their optional dependencies are absent; literature-review prompts can fall back to keyword search.
Separately, the companion Zotero Agent plugin replaces Unix-only command discovery on Windows with Windows-aware CLI and npm-shim handling. Issue #700 documents users being told Node.js and zotero-cli were missing even though they were installed.
The maintainer said the fix had not been tested on a real Windows machine at release. At 23:30 UTC on October 15, one participant reported that the update was working on Windows and said they would keep testing. That is a user report, not broad compatibility validation. Translation through pi remains unavailable on Windows, the release notes say.
The connector, the panel and the model are separate
The Python package requires Python 3.10 or newer and installs with uv tool install zotero-mcp-server. zotero-mcp setup connects an MCP client; shell-capable agents can instead use zotero-mcp install-skill to drive the CLI. Local reading needs Zotero 7 or newer with its local API enabled. Local writes require Zotero 10 or newer and authorization; older installations can use a Zotero web API key and library ID for writes.
The in-Zotero panel is a separate plugin, installed from the packaged .xpi through Zotero’s plugin menu. It needs Node.js and an installed, signed-in Claude Code, Codex or pi agent. It uses those agents’ subscriptions or configured provider keys; the plugin itself supplies no model or included inference allowance.
The panel can expose library context and paper text to the selected agent’s provider. Its agent may also run shell commands and read files under its permission settings. This is more than a PDF-only chat widget. AITrending reviewed the English release, documentation and issue discussion, but did not install the update or test its fixes.
