Zotero MCP lets assistants search, read, cite, annotate and organize a Zotero library. The Python package supplies an MCP server and a CLI with an agent skill. A companion Zotero Agent plugin connects a chat panel to an installed Claude Code, Codex or pi agent; the plugin does not run a model itself.
The base package requires Python 3.10 or newer. Local reads use Zotero 7 or newer with its local API enabled; local writes require Zotero 10 or newer and authorization. The server and CLI are MIT licensed, while the companion plugin is AGPL-3.0-or-later. Agent subscriptions or provider API usage are separate from the connector. Library content read by a cloud-backed agent can reach its chosen provider.
